When to Throw Out Your Produce

When to Throw Out Your Produce

Depending on the type of produce you buy and where you buy it, it may not always come with an expiration date. To reduce food waste and avoid throwing away your money, learn whether your produce is going bad and what to do with it if it is.

Avocados, for example, are still good to eat when they are mushy but if they're black on the inside, then it's time you throw them out. If you cut open an avocado and decide it's too mushy to slice and put on toast, then mash it in a bowl with some lime juice, garlic powder, and salsa to make guacamole.

The same goes for cucumbers. If they're soft, they're still okay. If the cucumbers are wet or slimy, it's best to throw them out or compost them.

The general rule of thumb for greens is if they're droopy, they are still okay to eat. If the spinach or lettuce is wet or slimy, it's time to toss them out. If you're like me and only like spinach when it's super crisp and fresh, blend the spinach with some fruit or veg to make a healthy juice if it's not crisp enough to chew.

Have you ever found some vegetables in the bottom drawer of your fridge and wondered if they were still good to eat? Use this chart we pulled from registered dietician, Dawn Jackson's Instagram to determine what to do with your fruit and veggies.
